GENDER MAJOR
It was in 1969 that Cornell University had the first accredited course on Gender Studies. A year later, the San Diego State College (now University) offered the first Gender Studies Program. Since then the there has been explosive growth. Over 6,000 public, private, or community colleges have graduated students with a 4 or 2-year degree in Gender Studies since 2012.
Gender Studies attracts those who are passionate about the cause of social justice. Increasingly, these programs are focusing on the intersectionality of gender with race, income equality, making them even more broadly relevant for real-world applications.
Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary field covering history, sociology, law, health, anthropology, literature, and more. It trains students to think about problems critically and search for integrated, creative solutions.
Studying Gender and its intersectionality requires learning about a broad set of fields and how they fit each other in the real world. This is great preparation for an impactful career that blends purpose and profession.
